I will be competing in the Ultimate Track Car Challenge this year. Hopefully I can pick up the high points of Virginia International Raceway quickly and get up to speed. I will be in the Varsity Independent Study Class which is for all cars that were prepped by private individuals and have "five or more cylinders, three or more rotors, or anything with forced induction." Obviously I will be way outgunned, but hope to have fun and at least be competitive.
Any tips from those of you who have been to VIR before? _________________ Bill

Turn that boost up as far as you can, the straights are very long.
I have no driving tips unfortunately, I've only been there once and only ran 1/2 of my sessions due to a broken car.
The climbing esses are the tits though! _________________

Google everything Peter Krause has had to say about the track, and if you have the $, go out for a TrackDaze event and pay him to coach you. He taught our classroom session there two years ago, and knows the track as well as anyone.
Brian instructed me in-car while I was there, so everything I learned came from the two of them. The main points I remember:
- Don't lift in the climbing esses. There's a Youtube video of an Audi R8 ending up in the tire wall after doing exactly that. Physics pretty much guarantees that result.
- Don't take Oak Tree Bend too fast. It's one of the slowest turns you'll see on a road course and leads on to one of the fastest straights.
- Take the last turn at the bottom of the roller coaster or whatever it's called, flat. It's the one that leads on to the pit straight.
The rest of the track is only full of dozens of tiny ways to lose a tenth here and there, and you'll really need a turn-by-turn analysis, which is way beyond me. _________________ -Mark M.
